360-Degree Geology Photography Notes

The first rule of thumb in 360-degree product imaging (and product photography in general) is creating color accurate results. This holds true for shooting precious stones especially when used for Scientific & Research Photography requirements. In order to do so, we have used our Small LumiPad LED Product Photography lighting kit, which sport evenly diffused high CRI LED lights. We enclosed this lighting (to make a sorta light box) using white foam board paneling. We then set a custom white balance so that our camera was shooting at the right color temperature to maximize color fidelity.

We had shot this Geology Photography example of an Amethyst rock in a 360-degree image using a total of 48 frames – that is one frame captured every 7.5-degrees using our Silver Series Jewelry Photography Turntable. The capture process was entirely automated through the Shutter Stream 360 Product Photography Software – with the camera synchronizing snap with turntable start/stop. As the 360 product photography image set was captured, it was uploaded directly into the software where we then used the batch editing tools to adjust background from off white to pure white. The entire process took only about 6 minutes.

If you are looking to photograph precious stones and specimens for Gemology purposes, Iconasys 360 photography turntables, software and lighting kits are sure to streamline the workflow while making it simple for users of any skill level to create high quality results.
